Many more Americans now believe sexual harassment at work is a serious problem

Many mora Americans now believe sexual harassment at work is a serious problemMany more Americans now believe sexual harassment at work is a serious problemWith the Harvey Weinstein scandaland others boiling over in recent weeks - combined with the viralMeToo social media movementfollowing in the scandals wake - findings from a new Washington Post-ABC News pollshow a significant change in public attitudes about sexual harassment 64% of Americans now consider sexual harassment of women at work a serious problem in the U.S., up from 47% back in 2011.More Americans say they take sexual harassment at work seriouslyFor the Washington Post-ABC News poll, 1,260 adults in the U.S. were surveyed. Thirty percent of women said theyve gotten unwanted sexual advances from a man working at the same company, while 23% of women said a man who had influence over their job did this to them. The poll found that 42% of women on the receiving end of unwanted sexual advances from a man with the influence over their work situation told someone in a supervisory position there, while 58% did not.Not always easy to speak upIts not always easy to speak up at work once something happens - telling someone about it can pose significant challenges.A 2016 report by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found that 75% of employees who spoke out against workplace mistreatment faced some form of retaliation.Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Womens Law Center, told The Washington Postabout why sexual harassment cases arent always brought to light.Theres a range of reasons why people dont report. One big one is that retaliation often accompanies harassment. People who come forward risk isolation and shaming, and they risk short or long-term damage to their careers, Graves told the Post.Thats how workplace perpetrators slip through the cracks. These feelings were echoed in the Washington Post-ABC News polls findings that 65% of respondents said they believe that a ma n who sexually harasses a female coworker usually gets away with it, versus 29% who said he suffers consequences for it.Workers look to employers to step inWorkers largely believe that its up to employers to step in.A recent survey of 508 U.S. adults found that 65% of them agreed that sexual harassment at work is the responsibility of the company to prevent or solve, while 28% thought this fell on the people involved. What this means in the context of theMeToo social media movementAlthough women like former Fox News Network host Gretchen Carlsonand others have spoken up about unwanted sexual advances at work in the past, the findingthat more Americans think sexual harassment of women at work is a serious problem than before speaks to the increased volume of people coming forward about this type of behavior in recent weeks. As the MeToo movementgained steam on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, many peoples friends and favorite celebrities related that theyve experiences sexual assault and/or harassment.Recode reported yesterday that, according to Facebook, more than 45 percent of people in the U.S. are friends with someone who has posted a Me too status.

How Long Should your Resume Be

How Long Should your Resume Be How Long Should your Resume Be Of course, as the years go by and you find yourself winning awards and adding to your volunteer and work experience, it has probably become much mora difficult to sell yourself using just that one page. But what about the age-old advice? Doesnt that ring true anymore?Truth be told, it does not and the prevalence of one-paged resumes is lessening. You will still see candidates who have one page, but they are, for the most pspecies, college graduates or those who have very little experience. If youve been around the block (and we are talking more than a few years of experience) then it is perfectly acceptable to have your resume move into the big leagues and use two pages. With a fresh start of just eight days into the new year, many people are still seeking employment so, fine-tuning your resume for 2013 may not be a bad thing. One important piece of advice is that if your resume is two pages and youre sending in a paper co py, avoid making that copy two sided because, chances are, whoever is reading it wont think to flip the page over. It seems like common sense, but you would be surprised at the number of people who dont regularly look at the backs of pages. Im guilty of doing this too.Perspectives differ on including references in the second or final page of a resume. Including references available upon request at the bottom of a resume is a waste of space if you are applying for a position recruiters will rightfully assume you already have a reference. An editor I know once said HR managers are going to ask for references anyway, so why not just give the names to them?If your resume is longer than three pages (which it should definitely not be, unless you have 20+ years of experience) then there are a few ways that you can whittle it down to two pages. If your career objective still heads up your resume, it needs to be removed immediately. Why? Well, if youre applying for a job at a healthcare organ ization, isnt your objective to secure a position as (insert the position you are applying for here) in healthcare? It is redundant and in some cases, it can hurt you.Point in case, I sent out a job posting for a Personal Support Worker and received a resume with an objective that said Looking to secure a position in retail as a customer service agent. Well, what are you doing applying for a job working as a health care aide? If you do have a career objective listed, make sure it is accurate and up-to-date.Other great ways to reduce clutter is to keep your skills list to just the essentials and get rid of any experience that isnt relevant or that is more than two decades old. From an experience standpoint, Ill tell you that people who have pages long- were talking anywhere between three and five pages- applying for even a senior or executive level position rarely get hired. Its overkill, plain and simple. So as a good rule of thumb, unless you have decades of work experience or extrem ely specific technical expertise that you need to include, keep your resume between 1-3 pages.Master the art of closing deals and making distribution policyments. Great for those who want to break into recruiting, or recruiters who want to further their career. How Long Should Your Resume Be The question of how long a resume should be has been a subject of debate among professionals for amany years, but the fact is that relevance and substance are the keys to determining the proper length of any resume. Additionally, your years of experience, key achievements, number of employers, audience, industry, and career goals should be factored into the decision as well.Helping You DecideIf you are a recent college graduate, changing careers, have less than10 years of work experience, or have held multipleroles with the same employer, a one-page res ume is generally sufficient to showcase your skills, qualifications, and achievements. However, bear in mind that you do not want to miss out on an opportunity by omitting important relevant details for the sake of keeping the resume limited to a certain number of pages. To help streamline your resume, lets say you are a project manager with an extensive project portfolio. If youd like to include more career highlights in your resume than one page allows for, try adding an addendum. The addendum is not specifically a part of your resume more a supplement that organizations can look over once your resume has enticed them to learn more about you.It is important to note that there is no blanket rule that works for everyone. The idea here is to allow relevance and substance to primarily drive your decision regarding the length of your resume. What to Cut and What to IncludeRecruiters are looking for position fit, relevance, and brevity. Your professional resume is a marketing tool, not a biography.Carefully consider your quantifiable scope of achievements, interpersonal skills, abilities, endorsements, awards, certifications, and education in an effort to use your resume real estate wisely. When possible, highlight instances where you saved money, improved processes, or led a team to achieve a key milestone within your opening statements and within different positions to show how your competencies align with your target companies and/or roles.Use LinkedIn as ExtraSpaceRegardless of your career stage, LinkedIn can be a great place to showcase internships, projects, recommendations from colleagues or clients, community involvement, hobbies, interests, coursework, and publications while also including an extended skills profile.Web portfolios or personal websites are also additional avenues to further communicate your brand, personality, causes you are passionate about, and interests.Focus on RelevancyKeeping in mind the 10-second human scan, tailor your professionall y written resume for each position and utilize a compelling qualifications summary or headline stated in roughly 3-4 sentences to help strengthen your connection with the human reviewer.Considering the resume is a marketing tool, information should be presented in a focused, clear, attention-grabbing, and easy-to-read layout. I often recommend keeping a master version of your resume that houses many of your career milestones, jobs, education/training details, and accomplishments. Update the master resume as your leadership career advances, you change jobs, you get promoted, or you expand the scope of your responsibilities. Then, as you apply for jobs, this will allow you to plug and play relevant information as needed for each targeted position. Avoid being too wordy on the resume, as some of the job details can be discussed during an interview.Build out your professional experience section with possibly 3-5 succinctly written, keyword-rich bullets per job to showcase your accomplish ments, as opposed tosimplyarticulating your duties and responsibilities. (Note In some cases, it may be necessary to extend the bullets beyond 3-5, depending on the amount of relevant information you have to share.)Try describing job details in two-line bullets for each position. This helps to keep your writing concise and offers great skimmability for the human reviewer.Utilize white space appropriately i.e., the final page of your resume should extend to at least half of the page. If it doesnt try to scale back so that your resume fits without bleeding over. Keep relevancy in mind when making cuts, and think about what kind of information you could better showcase elsewhere, like on LinkedIn.Many companies use keyword searches to find and sort resumes, so you should balance your soft skills with industry-specific keywords to align yourself with the positions requirements. The key takeaway here is to avoid writing a general resume that details every skill, responsibility, and trai ning course, youve ever had or engaged in.Increasing your marketability includes writing a high-impact professional resume deeply rooted in compelling content that succinctly conveys your qualifications for a given, targeted role.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. Talent Assessments and How Companies Use Them

Talent Assessments and How Companies Use ThemTalent Assessments and How Companies Use ThemWhat are talent assessments and why do employers use them? Some companies test applicants for employment to determine if candidates are a good match for their job vacancies. Companies who conduct talent assessments are seeking applicants that match their hiring criteria. Why Companies Use Talent Assessments Talent assessments, also called pre-employment tests or employment inspektion tests, are used to help employers identify candidates that will be a good fit for jobs at their company. These tests help predict a new hires on-the-job performance and retainability. So, in theory, applicants who pass the screening test should perform better as employees if theyre hired. Talent assessment tests are based on hiring and retention case studies and analyzing employee data. The test results will give the company an indication of how close a match the candidate taking the test will be to the companys hiring specifications. Companies Using Talent Assessments Talent assessments are used as part of an online screening process that helps employers to decide which candidates to interview. Most talent assessments are given online, or in a company or store office via computer, or a hiring kiosk. They are typically incorporated into the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) employers use to track applications. Many large companies like Macys, PetSmart, Bloomingdales, Sears, Express Scripts, Walmart, Burger King, Neiman Marcus, and Luxottica Retail Group, just to mention a few, use pre-employment testing. Types of Talent Assessments Most companies utilize online questionnaires to assess whether the personality, work style, knowledge or skills of candidates fit the job at hand or company culture. How The Tests Work While applying at one of the companies that use online talent assessments, the entire hiring process leading up to interviews is handled via the Internet. Job postings are listed online, candidates apply online through the company website, and then take the talent assessment. Applicants either take the test when they apply online or are directed, via schmelzglas or the company website, on how to take the test. Tests may be hosted on a third-party website. In that case, youll be given instructions on how to access and take the test. Some employers will use job simulations that are designed to measure whether candidates can perform tasks associated with the job. For example, an employer might ask a staff member to roleplay scenarios with candidates to assess sales, problem-solving, verbal communication, or counseling skills. Candidates for administrative or clerical staff positions might be asked to perform tasks that assess their accuracy, speed, proofreading, writing, and editing skills. For jobs that require physical ability, employers might set up simulations to assess strength, dexterity, or endurance. For teaching or other jobs that require pu blic speaking skills, employers might ask candidates to teach a lesson or give a group presentation. Talent Assessment Validity and Outcomes Companies that have developed job descriptions and candidate profiles that are detailed and well aligned with success factors for jobs will have the most useful output from talent assessments.Organizations must be careful to conduct assessments in a consistent, standardized manner to generate reliable results. Ethical hiring standards dictate that assessments be delivered to all candidates for a particular job and elend applied selectively. After you take the test, you may be told immediately whether you passed or failed, or you may not learn how you did. In some cases, you will be notified if the company is interested in hiring you. In other cases, you may not hear back at all, depending on company policy regarding notifying applicants for employment. By the way, pass or fail is a relative term. The results are based on how the employer th inks a candidate should answer, which doesnt necessarily correlate with your qualifications for employment. In many cases, the company is looking for a certain type of employee that is a fit for their organizational structure and company culture. Companies often have waiting periods before applicants who dont pass the test can take it again. Details on retaking assessments should be available on the company website. Sample Talent Assessment Questions What best describes your experiences providing feedback to others at work? If youre applying for a large, well-known employer, you may be able to get the inside scoop from current and former employees. This isnt cheating the actual questions will likely vary. But you can get a general sense of what to expect by Googling the employer plus talent assessment or pre-employment tests or similar. Youll likely find accounts from employees on Reddit, Quora, LinkedIn, and other social media/message boards. Prepare. If youre taking the test at home, make sure that you have time and space to complete it to the best of your abilities. Dont try to dash off answers at the kitchen table during dinner prep. Take the process seriously and youll produce better results. Be honest. Talent assessments and personality tests are supposed to provide an honest assessment of your skills and potential for cultural fit. Fake your answers and you might land the job - only to find yourself miserable after a few months and back on the job search again.

The Artificial Pancreas Project

The Artificial Pancreas Project The Artificial Pancreas Project When a chemical process stream goes bad, you call in the engineers. But thats in industry. What do you do when theres a glitch in one of the human bodys most complex and delicately balanced biochemical processes the regulation of blood sugar levels?Engineering has a vital role to play in improving that process too. So in 2005, medical science called in the engineers to help address the diabetes epidemic.Diabetes is the result of a defective pancreasan organ gland that pumps the hormones insulin and glucagon to stabilize blood sugar levels. Looked at another way, the pancreas is a pump, controlled by sophisticated real-time monitoring ordnungsprinzips, with biocomputational algorithms that let the two systems communicate. For people with insulin-dependent diabetes, life can feel like an ongoing struggle to monitor diet, check blood sugar, and administer injections. For physicians coping with the mounting diabetes epidemic, its an ongoing battle to help patients fend off heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, amputations, and other life-threatening complications of high blood sugar, as well as the risk of sudden death when blood sugar dips too low. Enter the Artificial Pancreas. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) launched its Artificial Pancreas Project six years ago to stimulate the development of a practical, mechanical, and artificial pancreas. The JDRF formed a global consortium of academic and government researchers and private corporations to carry out an orchestrated research and development agenda leading toward a functioning first-generation device. Both the glucose monitor and insulin delivery system must be discrete. Image courtesy of ACCU-CHEKBuilding a BridgeAlthough not a cure for diabetes, the artificial pancreas would provide a life-saving bridge to diabetics while researchers pursue a cellular-level solution. Like all bridges, its success will hinge on feats of engineeri ng.We will have (mechanical) solutions in next few years that will dramatically reduce the risk of diabetic complications and dramatically make life significantly easier, said Dr. Aaron Kowalski, assistant vice president of treatment therapies at JDRF. What well evolve toward is biomechanical approaches, such as beta cell regeneration and diabetes vaccination.A self-regulating system, the artificial pancreas would monitor blood sugar levels continuously and automatically release the right amount of insulin at the right times, effectively automating the daily management of diabetes. As with any complex real-time process control problem, the engineering challenges in the quest for an artificial pancreas are many and multidisciplinary. The first major breakthroughs were the invention of the insulin pump and the mechanical continuous glucose monitor, which measure blood glucose levels in real time, review trends and fluctuations, and issue alerts when levels rise or fall beyond safe lim its.The engineering task at hand was to further miniaturize, integrate, and automate unterstellung technologies.Smaller Is BetterThe ultimate device must be small enough to go unnoticed, robust enough to operate with minimal patient intervention, and accurate enough to permit complex therapeutic protocols.Miniaturization is key. Both the glucose monitor and the insulin delivery system must be discrete, with many vital components able to be implanted or worn just below the skin for long periods of time. Researchers must answer questions about how and where to place these devices in the body for optimal effect. They also must develop algorithms that translate the glucose measurements into highly precise and dynamic changes in the delivery of insulin to account for glucose-altering functions like eating and exercise.Research is driven by a JDRF-funded Artificial Pancreas Consortium including diabetes researchers, engineers, and biochemists from nine institutions in the U.S. and Europe. All participants are required to share their findings with the consortium. The JDRFs objective is to produce a prototype that works, has been tested and validated, and improves the lives of todays patients. However, the larger vision is to stimulate a vibrant commercial marketplace in these new devices that would continually drive improvements in performance and user-friendliness.Michael MacRae is an independent writer. For people with insulin-dependent diabetes, life can feel like an ongoing struggle to monitor diet, check blood sugar, and administer injections.

How to Follow Up on Job Applications 11 Tips

How to Follow Up on Job Applications 11 Tips How to Follow Up on Job Applications 11 Tips 10Theres elendhing like reading a job listing and feeling that this could be the perfect job for you. So you apply to the position- and then its crickets.Unfortunately, this can (and does) happen a whole lot when youre job searching. The hiring process can drag on for weeks (and sometimes months), and the waiting can be absolute agony. If you really want to know if youre in the running for the job, you should follow up on your job application.Heres how to do it the right wayHere are 11 tips on how to follow up on job applications1. Reread the listing. Before you do anything, read the job description over again thoroughly. career coach Toni Frana offers this advice Pay attention to dates or timelines that may be included in the posting. In the job posting, a company may mention when the application window closes. Once you apply, you wouldnt want to follow up prior to that date. Instead, use the o pportunity to keep applying for other positionsIf the date has already passed and you didnt hear anything from the employer, it might be time to put a pin in it and move on for now.2. Be respectful. In some scenarios, the job listing might state for applicants tonot call or email for their status. If thats the case, you should abide by the employers wishes and refrain from reaching out. Although it can be totally frustrating to wait it out, you shouldnt follow up- even though you really want to. If you ignore the request, the recruiter will think you either did not read the job listing carefully or that you do not follow directions well.3. Be brief. Its a good idea to know what youre going to say before following up on a job application. So whether you opt to call the hiring manager, email, or send a LinkedIn message, try to keep your contact as brief as possible. Its important to keep your correspondence short, as hiring managers and recruiters are likely receiving emails and notes fro m dozens of other candidates as well, so brevity is key. Your email or note should express two key things your continued interest in the job, and a question about when candidates can expect to hear about next steps, says Frana.4. Be professional.Just because you sent in your application or actually got to speak with the hiring manager doesnt mean that youre bosom buddies. Being overly personal or casual is a mistake. Recruiters and hiring managers are friendly, and it is their job to talk to several people about a position. They dont, however, have time to become personal friends with everyone they interview. Even if your initial interaction was excellent, be professional and respect personal boundaries when following up on job applications.5. Ask a follow-up question.Sure, you know that you really just want to find out if you got the gig or not. But in reservierung to justify your follow up,you might want to pose a question to the employer. If theyre still receiving applications, y ou can ask when they expect to start narrowing down their decisions and when interviews will begin. This can give you a guideline of when you can expect to hear back.6. Know the right timing. While you might want tofollow up on a job application just a few days after submitting it, you should probably wait a little longer. Frana suggests Unless the job posting specifically states the application closing window, in which case that gives you a target date for follow-up, waiting about a week or two before following up on applications is a good rule of thumb. In general, this gives the hiring team enough time on their end to review received applications.7. Pick the right day.If there are two days to avoid following up with someone, it is Monday and Friday. Monday is often a busy transition day as people move back into work mode. As for Friday, if the person doesnt see your email, it may get buried under a weekends worth of emails. Ideally, stick with Tuesday through Thursday for followin g up on job applications.8. Use your connections.Maybe your former colleague (or your Aunt Marty) is friends with one of the execs at the new company you want to work for. Go through your business and personal contacts tosee if you know anyone who can help you get your foot in the door- or get your resume placed at the head of the pile. Explain the role that youre looking to get, and everything that qualifies you for the job, such as your education, skills platzset, and work experience. But dont stop there- be aya to offer your assistance to the person, too. That way, they might be more amenable to helping you as well. You can also use LinkedIn to see if you have anyone in your network who might have a connection to the company youd like to work for. If you do, you can always reach out and see if that person has some inside intel on the job. Depending on your relationship with the person, you might be able to ask for a recommendationor for the person to put in a good word for you.9. G et social.Jump on the social media bandwagon and Like the companys Facebook page and follow their Twitter feed. In todays job market, companies want to find an employee with the right skill set and someone who fits in with the company culture. Showing and expressing interest in the company can be done through engaging with them on social media. Follow the company page on LinkedIn and other platforms. Like and comment on their posts as this shows the team you are enthused about what they are doing, suggests Frana.10. Give a call.If you havent heard back about your job application after two weeks, its perfectly acceptable to call the hiring manager unless the listing states otherwise. You can say Hi, Im following up on an application that I sent. Im very interested in the role and your company, and I just wanted to ensure that you received it. This way youll know if the person is still sorting through resumes or if the position has already been filled. Then, listen to what the person s ays.If they say that theyre in the preliminary stages of vetting candidates and going through applications, you can ask if they know a timeline with when theyll be in touch with candidates. If you dont receive a phone call or an email during the time period specified, you are probably not a contender for the position.11. Let them know youre in demand. If the company has expressed interest in you as a candidate for the job, but you havent heard anything since that initial contact, you can try to speed up the process by letting them know that other companies are interested in you- if and only if thats true. If you do have other companies interested in you, but are interested in a particular position, you can think about letting them know youre in demand. Simply stating in your follow-up email that you continue to be very interested in the position, but are also exploring other opportunities can be a gentle way to nudge a company along, says Frana.Dont use any sort of threatening langua ge, and be careful that you dont come off as egotistical. But subtly letting them know youre in demand can be a smart tactic, as it mayencourage companies to look at you more seriouslyand/or move things along in the process. While you may feel like youre bothersome, knowing how to follow up on a job application could be the difference between getting interviews and not making any progress. Following up is an expected part of the application process, so be proactive about getting the job you wantWant to talk through your job search and career questions with someone? Pumping Extremely Hot Metal, Part 2

Pumping Extremely Hot Metal, Part 2 Pumping Extremely Hot Metal, Part 2 Pumping Extremely Hot Metal, Part 2 Part 1 of Pumping Extremely Hot Metal described the premise of a new type of ceramic pump and the applications it could serve. This part looks at the challenges the team faced in designing the pump and the solutions they used to improve design. To create the pump, Henry had to first choose the material for its components and the heat transfer media that would flow through it. For the media, Henry knew he had to use a liquid. Its low viscosity makes liquid easy to move and control without using a lot of energy, making it the most efficient and effective way to transfer heat. The higher the temperature, the more useful the liquid is, Henry says. The problem is, what liquid to use. Fluids commonly used in heat transfer systems include salt, glass, and oil. But those materials have too many disadvantages - heat limitations, high viscosity, corrosiveness, low thermal conductivity and density - for the types of extreme-heat applications Henry had in mind. Molten metal, however, especially tin, performs much better in all of those areas. Liquid metal flowing at 1400 C in the crucible. Image: Caleb Amy It is low viscosity; as soon as it melts, it flows like water. And its electrically conductive. Thats huge because that capability doesnt change and the electrons can move freely; the liquid connectivity is almost the same as a solid connective, Henry says. With metal you end up in a different regime of heat transfer. Heat transfer in liquid metal is extremely effective. You get a whole lot more heat transfer given the energy needed to move it. Molten metals, however, can eat away at metal pipes and other components. Its like trying to make piping for sugar water with pipes made from sugar, Henry says. For You: Read the latest on fluid engineering breakthroughs from ASME.org. That last piece helped Henry decide to build all of the components of the pump a gear pump, in this case, for simplicity and reliability - from ceramic. Ceramics, though, are brittle. The team feared ceramic gears and other components used to pump and circulate extremely hot metal would crack and fail. But new breeds of ceramics can retain their mechanical stiffness at temperatures over 1,300 K. After some research, Henry chose Shapal Hi-M Soft, introduced in 2012 and known for its increased machinability, mechanical strength, and thermal conductivity. With metal you end up in a different regime of heat transfer. Heat transfer in liquid metal is extremely effective. You get a whole lot more heat transfer given the energy needed to move it.Prof. Asegun Henry, Georgia Tech Despite those attributes, extreme heat caused one version of the pump to expand and vertically misalign by 1 mm. As a solution, the team intentionally misaligned the pump by connecting a vertically angled, flexible tungsten sleeve on the insulating shaft connecting the pump to the motor. Another major design problem remained. Most pump seals are made from polymers, which vaporize under extreme heat. After about three years of trials and testing, the team finally settled on pure graphite to seal the pump, pipes, and valves. Theyre real squishy and are good up to about 3000 C, Henry says. But graphite oxidizes. To prevent that, the team built a simple vacuum chamber around the pump and filled it with a cover gas of nitrogen. It also allowed the team to use tungsten on the outside of the seals to strengthen areas where tensile forces were applied. The chamber doesnt greatly impact the cost of the system; it can be made from thin metal and double as a protective covering. When you take oxidation off the table, it opens up a range of materials you can use, Henry says. Not What They Expected By the morning of the third day of testing, Henrys students were begging to go home. Henry made them wait. He had to be sure that this version solved past problems. After 72 hours running at an average of 1,473 K, Henry pulled the plug on the pump and declared the new design a success.I said shut it down because it wasnt going to break, he says. The students had given up before, so everyone was excited. It was a big triumph. Even though the pump worked, Henry is still working on future iterations. The teeth of the drive gear wore slightly, a problem Henry could solve by replacing the Shapal with a harder material such as the more expensive silicon carbide. Hes now looking for a cost-effective source. Henry will also try replacing the gear pump with a centrifugal pump to increase its speed. Then the new rounds of testing will begin. He expects to have a commercial version ready within two to three years. When youre doing engineering and technical development there are different types of barriers to success, he says. But we had tested enough aspects to know that it would work. We knew it could be done. You cant let the challenge or the effort be a barrier to trying again and again. If you have good ideas, you shouldnt give up. Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama

Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama by Alaina G. Levine Published July 2016 Alex Mitchell grew up on the space coast of Florida in the shadow of Cape Canaveral. He always knew he wanted to work in the space industry, and pursued a bachelors in mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama (UA) to make it happen. But it was his involvement in ASME that catapulted his cosmos-career aspirations into the stratosphere. In 2015, NASA announced a design challenge, in which undergraduates from around the nation were charged with designing, building, and testing a tool or device that addresses a current need in space exploration. The program, entitled the Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Teams (Micro-g NExT), gave students the opportunity to engage in developing the tool which, if chosen, would then be tested in the simulated microgravity environment of the NASA Johnson Space Center Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL). The Universities Float sample grabber prototype. Photo credit Alex Mitchell Mitchell jumped at the chance to participate in a real-life space exploration project. He and his colleague Stephen Peter Rowe led their fellow team mates, ASME members and Society of Women Engineers members alike, to form 2 teams and submit 2 proposals to this program. The first proposal, led by Mitchell, was called Understanding Asteroids and aimed to design a float sample grabber, which could be deployed from a spacecraft, to collect small, loose asteroid samples for further scientific exploration. The second proposal team led by Rowe, named STRAHL, focused on designing a Gap Spanner Boom, a device that astronauts could use to traverse the distance between a spacecraft and an asteroid The purpose of this boom was to operate with the Orion, a newly designed spacecraft for taking a crew to an asteroid or other planets, which will be docked to an Asteroid Redirect Vehicle (ARV). A gap of 56-inches will exist between the Orion and ARV, which must be traversed by astronauts without dam aging delicate heating shield tiles on the Orion, explains Mitchell. The Gap Spanner Boom is the tool to help astronauts move through this distance. The teams started planning their projects in August 2015, submitted their letters of intent at the beginning of October, and finalized their proposals, with a proof of concept of their tools, by the end of October 2015. In early December, they received notice of acceptance of both proposals and since then, have been designing and building the tools. NASA accepted only 25 teams nationwide for this program, and UA was the only university to have 2 teams represented. Its pretty amazing that Im involved in building tools for NASA, he says. Its not something I expected to be doing in my undergrad experience. In May and June 2016, the two teams ventured to NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston to see their prototypes tested in the same pool where astronauts train for space missions. At that point, NASA could take the tool and use it as is, or redesign it or learn from it to design a better tool, explains Mitchell. They have intellectual rights to our tools and designs. In addition to the technical facets of the project, the teams considered outreach a vital component, and they received an ASME Diversity Action Grant to facilitate community engagement. We wanted to get people excited about engineering and science, especially those who dont have much of a chance to access this stuff, he says. The team approached elementary and middle schools and arranged for visits in which the ME students gave presentations about space exploration and careers in space and at NASA. They also conducted workshops for the kids, where they had the opportunity to build their own float sample grabbers. As the team members guided the children in designing their own tools, the kids learned the fundamentals of the scientific method, team-based problem-solving, and logic and analysis. Team STRAHL (left to right) Rene Gromotka, Logan Cook, Hope Thompson, Andrew Sanders (Missing - Andrew Sanders) speak to students about NASAs Path to Mars. Photo credit Andrew Sanders The teams interacted directly with upwards of 500 students at 6 schools, ranging from a technology magnet school to inner city schools with limited resources for STEM education. Some of the kids are in low income areas, so the chance to give them this opportunity to see the stuff is touching, he says. They also presented to 250 kids as part of the February 2016 Engineering Day at McWane Science Center, a regional science museum in Birmingham, AL. The ASME members strove to not only engage younger students in the projects but also ignite their passion for space and engineering problem solving. At the high- and magnet schools, the kids designed a robot, describes Mitchell. One of the magnet schools has a robotics team and so we tasked them with converting their robot to a sample grabber and then we competed with them with our tool. The impact was significant and clear, notes Mitchell. The teachers specifically remarked that their pupils not only enjoyed their presentation but found great value in it. We had younger kids who didnt understand that some career paths draw from engineering, such as pilots, and professionals who work on space missions, that they get their start with these subjects, he says. It was eye-opening for them, that these degrees, mechanical engineering in particular, give them a wide range of career paths later in life. One third grader said he wanted to be a pilot. We told him that pilots and other similar military professionals require a background in engineering. It was great to see that really struck a chord with him and made him want to engage with the lesson. Not surprisingly, the entire project struck a chord with Mitchell and his team as well, as there was much value gained. On the technology front, he expanded his knowledge of material properties and interfaces, as well as machine shop and engineering design. The team used a 3D printer to construct the tool, so they learned about the complexity of using this manufacturing method for rapid prototyping of the parts. But it was the opportunity to hone his capacity for leadership that benefited him the most. He oversaw 1 team of 6 students and coordinated simultaneously with Rowe and his team over the course of an entire school year. I had experience running student design projects, but this was a different animal, he says. It was a learning experience in time management and coordinating others. Strong communications was an essential element of the projects success. Mitchell discovered the importance of adapting his communication methods depending upon the needs and preferences of the individual team member. Furthermore, there were plenty of opportunities to hone skills in a diversity of communication mechanisms, from social media to promote the teams progress, to technical documentation required by NASA, to public speaking as part of the outreach. Near the end we had to submit multiple documents for multiple people, put together a final report and poster for the university as well as for NASA, and do outreach, he says. A lot of things were going on at the same time. And I knew I had definitely improved as a leader because sometimes things fall through the cracks. But in this project, nothing fell. We were all pulling our own weight. There was delegation and motivation, and we all improved as a group, and I improved my own leadership skills. Reflecting back over the exciting year, Mitchell sees it as a win-win-win-win, for himself, his team members, the kids he presented too via the outreach, and even future UA ASME members. Its been a wonderful experience and hopefully we can keep the door open with NASA to help other people get the same experience we got, he says. We want to help the UA chapter in the future, and the network of engineers coming up. I would definitely like to see them be in this career area. In May 2016, Mitchell graduated from the UA and is headed to Lockheed Martin to serve as a Mechanical Design engineer in Orlando, just a stones throw from Cape Canaveral. Mission: Accomplished.

How to spot if youre a bad listener (and what you can do to change it!)

How to spot if you're a bad listener (and what you can do to change it!) How to spot if you're a bad listener (and what you can do to change it!) You’ve been planning to catch up with your bestie for weeks. But between late nights at work and weekends running from errands to engagement parties, you’ve both been seriously MIA. That is, until tonight. Finally, a long overdue evening of wine, cheese, and a whole lotta chat.As you both settle in, your gaze drifts off to the table on your right. You spot that luxe pair of Mansur Gavriel heels you’ve been eyeing at Incu for weeks. ‘They’re even more perfect in the flesh’,  you think as your mind begins to style potential outfit combinations. ‘I can definitely pull those off at work, maybe I can claim it on tax?’  you ponder, wishfully.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Suddenly, you feel your bestie’s gaze and realize she’s waiting for a response. You can’t recall what she was speaking about, or what on earth she’s waiting for you to say.Communication is the key to  healthy, thriving relationships.  As simple as it seems, listening is one of the most overlooked aspects of effective communication. Let’s explore what  red flags  to watch out for and how to overcome the most common listening mistakes to foster meaningful connections with your friends and family.Asking questions and not listening to the answerEver feel like your conversations are more like an episode of  QA? Questions are a fantastic way to delve deeper into a topic, giving you a better insight into a friend’s latest hobby or the plotline of a new binge-worthy TV show. The issues arise when you, as the questioner, switch off. It’s important to ask questions with the intention of mindfully listening to the answer. A great way to become an active listener is to avoid firing off a thousand dead-end questions, and instead use the speakers’ answer as a springboard to build discussion.By using questions as thought-starters for larger conversations, you’ll be able to really tune in to what the other speaker is saying and dive deep into meaningful discussions.Always waiting for your next chance to speakWhen we are constantly on the look-out for breaks in conversation to speak, we’re unable to fully immerse ourselves in what the other person is saying. Next time you’re chatting with a  good friend, observe where your thoughts are going. Are you actively comprehending what they’re speaking about or planning your next story to share?Train yourself to stay in the moment by focusing on what the other person is discussing. Try to take note of the details they’re sharing, such as the names of friends or coworkers they’ve mentioned or where they went for dinner last night. This technique will keep you engaged in the conversation and allow you to respond thoughtfully.Let the conversation flow naturally and move organically from one topic to the next to ensure the speaker feels respected and heard.Jumping in frequently with advice or personal anecdotes“That reminds me of the time I…” Sound familiar? We are all guilty of shifting the focus back onto ourselves and unknowingly hijacking conversations. Although we might believe this helps to build a connection, it can often alienate the speaker and make them feel as if we are devaluing their experiences.Because no one wants to have their break up or a bad day at work compared to someone else’s.Getting distracted on your phoneThere’s nothing worse than sitting across from someone while they leisurely reply to their latest Instagram DMs. Or, worse, check their emails.Show your loved ones they have your full attention by putting your phone on silent (or better, ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode) and make a pact to keep all phones away from the table. Even the buzz of a notification or sound of an incoming call can be enough to pull us out of the moment and derail deep conversations. This article originally appeared on A Girl in Progress. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

You wont believe the staggering amount of time wasted on workplace smoke breaks

You won't believe the staggering amount of time wasted on workplace smoke breaks You won't believe the staggering amount of time wasted on workplace smoke breaks Have you ever wondered if company suggestion boxes ever really amount to change? For employees at one Japanese marketing agency, a simple submission turned into almost a full week of paid time off. After watching their coworkers take multiple smoke breaks during working hours, one employee complained their regular absence disrupted productivity. The company responded by giving nonsmoking employees an additional six days of paid vacation time.If that sounds like a lot, consider this: Every year, smoking-related illnesses cost over $156 billion in lost productivity, including $5.6 billion as a result of secondhand smoke exposure. To understand how employed Americans feel about the time their coworkers spend smoking, HaloCigs surveyed over 1,000 people about how fair smoke breaks really are, if U.S. companies should give nonsmokers extra vacation days, and how many of these extra days smokers would need to kick the habit altogether. Curious how much time is really being wasted by smokers in your industry? Read on to see what we uncovered.Time lost to smokingWhile the average smoker takes roughly six days of smoke breaks every year, time wasted on smoke breaks fluctuated greatly for Americans in various industries. Americans in technology, wholesale and retail, and finance and insurance spent more than an hour and 20 minutes each day on smoke breaks at work. Those breaks equated to over 40 hours a month and more than 20 days every year for each industry.Jobs in these industries (including IT and financial managers) are often among the most stressful in the country. Other industries taking smoke breaks for more than one hour each day included transportation and warehousing, arts, entertainment, and recreation, information services and data processing, hotel, food services, and hospitality, and medical and healthcare.Stance on smoke breaksAn estimated 36.5 million adults in the U.S. smoke. While the law doesn’t require breaks for employees, additional paid smoking b reaks have been provided to employees who request them without the same time offered to nonsmoking employees.Over 81% of smokers said smoke breaks were fair, while roughly 1 in 4 nonsmokers agreed. Perceptions of these breaks varied by industry, as well. Over 17% of medical and healthcare professionals who smoked, themselves, believed smoke breaks were fair.Other industries with a more favorable opinion toward smoke breaks included wholesale and retail (nearly 15%), hotel, food services, and hospitality (about 12%), and education (over 11%).Deserving days offConsidering the average smoker spends roughly six days each year on smoke breaks at work, we asked smokers and nonsmokers how many extra days of vacation should be offered to nonsmokers.More than 38% of smokers and nearly 20% of nonsmokers didn’t think nonsmokers deserved any additional vacation days. While roughly 1 in 4 nonsmokers suggested one or two extra vacation days was fair, nearly 42% said nonsmokers should be given b etween three and five additional vacation days each year. More smokers (over 16%) than nonsmokers (nearly 14%) indicated nonsmokers should receive seven days or more of additional vacation time.Incentives for quitting smokingSome additives found in cigarettes can be addicting, and going without a cig for even short periods can lead to cravings and feelings of withdrawals. While quitting smoking can be difficult, one study found increasing the price of cigarettes by even $1 made smokers 20% more likely to quit.On average, Americans would be willing to give up smoking for an additional 11 days of vacation time each year. Women suggested a slightly higher average â€" 12 extra vacation days each year. Certain industries also indicated a higher incentive price for giving up smoking. Smokers working in education (30 days), wholesale and retail (17 days), and legal (15 days) would need the highest number of additional vacation days to consider kicking the habit.Monetary motivationDespite t he health benefits of giving up cigarettes, millions of people find it hard to surrender smoking completely. Despite health concerns, lost productivity, and general time wasted, many Americans believed companies should offer incentives for employees to quit smoking. Highest among them were people working in arts, entertainment, and recreation (over 93%), government and public administration (nearly 90%), and technology (about 87%). Ultimately, 82% of employees across all industries agreed that incentives to quit were a good idea.  Methodology:  HaloCigs surveyed 1,005 Americans from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk about the fairness of smoke breaks in the workplace. Fifty-one percent of participants identified as female, while 49% identified as male. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 73 years old, with a mean of 35. Participants were excluded if they were not paying attention (such as failing the attention check question or entering obviously inconsistent data). We weighted the data to the 2017 U.S. Census for age and gender. Hypotheses were then statistically tested.

Careers in Physical Therapy

Careers in Physical Therapy Careers in Physical Therapy The field of physical therapy involves treating individuals who have problems with movement or pain caused by injuries or illnesses. The people who work in this area- physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and physical therapy aides- have one goal in common. They all want to help their patients feel and move better. Their roles in this endeavor differ greatly  from one anothers however, as do their  educational  and licensing requirements, and salaries. If the idea of improving patients quality of life by contributing to their physical therapy treatment appeals to you, there may be a place for you in this field. You should take the time to decide which of these three occupations is a better fit for you. Physical Therapist Of the three people on the PT team, the  physical therapist  is the one who has the greatest responsibilities. He or she develops treatment plans for patients and oversees them until the desired outcomes are achieved. PTs, as they are commonly called,  provide services that restore patients function, improve their mobility, relieve their pain, and limit permanent physical disabilities. These extensive responsibilities demand the highest level of education of all three occupations in this field. If you think you are well suited for this role, you must decide whether you are willing and able to spend the next six or seven years of your life in school earning first a bachelors degree and then a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Degree. After you complete your education, which includes clinical field training, you will have to get a license from the state in which you want to work. To do this, you must take and pass the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE)  for physical therapists, a five-hour test. Your state may also require you to take other exams. You will be well compensated for your efforts. Physical therapists earned a median annual salary  of $84,020 in 2015. This was almost $29,000 more than physical therapist assistants earned and over three times physical therapy aides earnings. Physical Therapist Assistant One level down in terms of responsibilities is the physical therapist assistant. He or she delivers treatment to patients but must do so under a physical therapists  supervision. The PT Assistant helps implement the PTs treatment plan. Because this role comes with fewer  responsibilities, it doesnt require as much education. The requirements, in fact, are significantly less. If you want to become a physical therapist assistant, you need an associate degree from an accredited physical therapist assistant program. It will typically take you two years to complete your schooling which includes classroom training and clinical fieldwork.   To work as a physical therapist assistant, you must get a license from the state in which you want to work. You will have to take and pass the  National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) for physical therapist assistants. It is a four-hour test. There may be additional requirements in your state. Physical therapist assistants are compensated quite well, considering that it only takes two years of school to prepare for this career. Its median salary of $55,170 (2015) puts it into the top 20 highest paying occupations that require only an associate degree (CareerOneStop. Highest Paying Occupations By Median Hourly Wages). Physical Therapy Aide Physical therapy aides work under the direction of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. They have the least involvement with direct patient care. Instead, they help make physical therapy sessions productive by preparing treatment areas for therapy sessions. They keep them clean and organized. PT aides transport patients to and from these treatment areas. These tasks dont require a lot of training.
